Preliminary
Report on Governor's Proposed Budget
Dear
Friend,
Last
week, in my role as chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, I convened
the first meeting of the Committee to consider the Governor's proposed
2005-2006 state budget. In order to more quickly address the critical
budget issues before us, and involve as many Californians as possible,
several important steps of the legislative budget process are being
moved earlier this year than in the past, including last week's
hearing, the Budget Subcommittee hearings (scheduled to begin next
week), and the annual Preliminary Budget Review.
I'd
like to invite you to take a look at the Preliminary Budget Review
by visiting my Website at http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a27/.
At the top of the homepage, there are links to both the Review and
my opening remarks from last week's hearing. A useful report, the
Review outlines and provides background for the Governor's major
budget proposals and puts them in some perspective. It is organized
by traditional topics, and highlights major provisions. I hope you
find this information helpful.
If
you have any questions or need more information, please contact
Craig O'Donnell, my new Santa Clara County District Director, at
craig.o'donnell@asm.ca.gov or at our new Santa Clara County direct
line: 408-782-0647. Craig has a strong understanding of the issues
facing our area, having worked for Congressmember Farr for several
years. Reed Addis, who has been serving as my temporary District
Director following the retirement of Gary Shallcross, is now working
in my Sacramento office as a legislative assistant.
The
budget should be our blueprint for investment in California's future-it
is a statement of where we want California to be in twenty years.
Though there are many difficult choices before us this year, our
best hope for making the right decisions will come through strong
public participation.
Sincerely,
JOHN
LAIRD
